A man, who handed over the murder suspect in connection with the death of Philippi teenager Amahle Quku to police, is fighting for his life in hospital after he was shot on Sunday night.
The 17-year-old girl was found dead on Saturday morning and a man in his 20s was handed over to the police by a community leader.
A source says this angered the community, who wanted to take the law into their own hands, and the 41-year old community leader’s shack was demolished and he was shot at.
Philippi has been a volatile area, following the shocking discovery of Amahle’s naked body.
Angry residents have been protesting since Sunday, blocking roads with rubble and burning tyres, demanding justice for the teen.
A spokesperson for Amahle’s family said they were not aware of the latest developments: “We were busy with body identification today and we do not know what happens outside our home.”
A resident tells the Daily Voice that the community had a meeting on Sunday, where many expressed anger, saying the suspect should have been left with the community to deal with.
“There are two other people who are reportedly involved in the murder, we were told their parents sent them away to escape possible vigilantism,” says the resident.
