Child murder may have dropped by 7%, but 943 kids were still murdered in South Africa in the last financial year.
This emerged from the latest 2019/2020 annual crime statistics presented by the Ministry of Police on Friday.
There was no breakdown on provincial figures but last year the Department of Social Development revealed that between April 2013 and March 2018, over 1000 children were killed, translating to four children murdered in the Western Cape every week.
This year, there have already been a number of child murders in the province including 12-year-old Michaela Williams and Tazne van Wyk, eight.
According to the latest figures, 22 070 sexual offences were committed on children and another 17 118 incidents of rape were reported.
Sex crimes against women in the Western Cape have increased by 3.7%, rape increased by 4.9% while sexual assault also increased, by 8.7%.
Meanwhile, Nyanga remains the carjacking capital of the country for the fifth year running.
In total, 2760 carjackings were recorded in the Western Cape, the third highest figure after Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Nyanga recorded a 40.3% increase in reports of carjackings, standing at 383 cases, with 110 new incidents.
This was followed by Philippi-East which recorded a whopping 116% increase.
According to the national figures, sedans and hatchbacks remain the most-hijacked vehicles in the country with 5245 of them stolen, bakkies came in second at 2200 and taxis were the third most-hijacked vehicles at 945 across the country.
