Chauncey’s Epic Anti-Bullying Campaign has come to the aid of a Tafelsig High School meisie who was being bullied for her hair and teeth on social media.
The 14-year-old Grade 8 pupil, who appeared in the Daily Voice on Monday, tried to commit suicide after her classmates published photos of her on Facebook and made fun of her braids and teeth.
Some also made memes of the photos which were circulated on WhatsApp groups.
Her angry mother says they reported the matter to the school principal but he allegedly refused to address it.
According to the Western Cape Education Department, the school did intervene and the bullies were instructed to apologise, but the mom says this never happened.
The girl has refused to go back to school.
Now, Beverley Davids, the founder of Chauncey’s Epic Anti-Bullying Campaign has offered to help the victim overcome the traumatic experience, redo her braids and have a dentist fix the girl’s teeth.
Beverley started the campaign after her son, Chauncey, was bullied in primary school.
Chauncey died in 2014 after a failed science experiment at home.
Beverley tells the Daily Voice: “If the mother did not reach out to the Daily Voice, we surely might have lost this young girl to suicide.
“With every bullying saga reported, our (Education) MEC Debbie Schafer’s office says that they have bullying under control, but we as the communities who they serve, never see the end result.
“We will give the victim a new lease on life and give her a little makeover to make her feel good again.”
The girl’s mom was moved to tears and said they welcome the assistance: “I'm extremely grateful that someone wants to help my daughter.”
