Close to 60 000 pupils are bracing themselves for the announcement of the National Matric results and pass rate this week.
At 6pm today, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will announce the pass rate in the province and the rest of the country.
Pupils are expected to start receiving their results at midnight via SMS, although most will be flocking to their various schools tomorrow where the results will be announced at noon.
A total of 53 395 candidates wrote the National Senior
Certificate examinations in the Western Cape in 2019.
The province had 1 463 invigilators and 466 exam centres.
In 2018, the matric pass rate in the region was 81.5%.
Minister of Education in the Western Cape, Debbie Schäfer, will be visiting the Paarl High School Gymnasium for the release of the results and the announcement of the top
students.
On January 16, Schäfer will celebrate with the top achievers at the Premier’s Leeuwenhof residence.
Pupils - accompanied by their student examination number and ID - can check their results at the school or exam centre and in local newspapers.
The results will be available from the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) at a rate of R3 per SMS, and the Department of Basic Education.
To get your results via SMS, send your 13-digit identity number and exam number to 35658.
Alternatively, use the USSD service by dialling *120*35658# and follow the prompts.
You’ll receive your results per subject after you’ve completed the process. USSD rates apply.
Schäfer says: “Given the circumstances under which we are working - increasing numbers, people coming in Grade 10 from other, weaker, provinces, decreasing budgets, increased class sizes and worsening socio-economic circumstances, I am hoping to maintain above 80% pass rate.
“I think that is the most realistic I can be.”
