NOWHERE TO GO: One of the skelms caught by Metro cops in Macassar on Sunday afternoon NOWHERE TO GO: One of the skelms caught by Metro cops in Macassar on Sunday afternoon
Five suspected skelms thought they had hit the jackpot on Sunday after robbing the Mr Price store at Somerset Mall.
The thieves successfully robbed the store and drove towards Macassar on the N2 highway.
Police say two of the five got out of the car and started walking, while apparently admiring their ill-gotten gains.
A suspicious community member flagged down Metro Police officers patrolling the area, reporting that the two men walking down the street had been involved in a robbery.
Metro police spokesperson Ruth Solomons says as the officers approached the suspects, they jumped into a car with three men in it and sped off and a chase ensued.
“On Sunday afternoon around 2.15pm, Metro Police officers attached to the K9 unit arrested five suspects for the possession of suspected stolen goods and reckless and negligent driving in Macassar,” says Solomons.
“The officers approached the two suspects, but the men jumped into a light blue Toyota Corolla, resulting in a chase along the N2, direction Cape Town.
“During the pursuit, the vehicle occupants started throwing items of clothing out of the window.”
Their luck ran out and the vehicle was cornered in Macassar.
Officers then set about picking up all the stolen clothes that lay strewn all over the road.
“The officers collected all the clothing items, valued at approximately R15 000,” says Solomons.
The five suspects between the ages of 22 and 26 were detained at Macassar SAPS for further investigation.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana says the suspects will appear in court this week.
“Please be advised that five suspects will appear in court following their arrest for a business robbery,” she says.
