A suspected gang hitman accused of trying to execute his rival at a Wynberg mosque has been sent to the mang.
Faizel Ovis, 32, made his first appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after the dramatic hit last Friday which left one dead and two wounded.
Ovis, from Heideveld, is accused of firing a hail of bullets at Mogamat “Gummie” Solomons, 43 the alleged leader of the American gang in Heideveld, as he left the Park Road masjid just after jumu’ah prayers.
Solomons’ nephew Adenaan Cloete, 29, who was behind the wheel of the silver VW Golf, died at the scene while a passenger, Reza Clayton, 41, was wounded.
There was chaos outside the mosque as musallees came out to find Gummie lying bleeding in the street and a dead man behind the wheel.
Witnesses said two shooters fled on foot.
Daily Voice sources say Gummie was hit in the buttocks as he was getting into the car, and about 21 bullet doppies were found at the scene.
The source says Gummie was targeted by Ovis, who is a member of the Fancy Boys gang, amid a deadly war in Heideveld.
“The Fancy Boys have started taking over Heideveld and targeted Gummie. They have started widespread shootings in the area as they are doing a takeover of all American turf in various areas,” says the source.
“Faizel is ’n ou Fancy Boy who came out of the mang just over a year ago. He is on parole for armed robbery and firearm cases.
“After the hit at the mosque, he went into hiding and the Anti-Gang Unit found him at a Fancy Boys’ pos in Greatfish Road in Manenberg.”
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Reza Clayton has been left paralysed as a result of the shooting.
The case was postponed to 9 November when Ovis will apply for bail. He was remanded at Pollsmoor Prison.
“Gummie was only shot in the bum and he is fine now,” the source adds.
