This mother of three was brutally gunned down in the early hours of yesterday morning in what police sources believe is a gang and drug-related attack.
Labeeqa “Devina” Schippers, 24, was shot five times — hit in her face, arm, chest and side of her body.
A police source says she was with people at the time of the attack around 4.45am in Bonteheuwel.
“Apparently she was walking with two men when they were shot at. Her boyfriend is in jail for drug smuggling. The attack was gang-related,” the source tells the Daily Voice.
Her devastated mother arrived at the scene shortly after her daughter’s body was removed by cops yesterday.
“ Wat het met my kind gebeu r?” Firdous Schippers, 42, cried as she got out of the car.
The mom says she was at work when she got a call from her son in prison about her daughter’s murder.
Firdous, who takes care of Labeeqa’s three kids, aged seven, two and one, says her daughter would have celebrated her 25th birthday on Monday.
“It’s been eight months since I last saw her but we talked (on the phone) on a regular basis,” the granny says.
“She was a drug user but she was not involved in gangsters. Her three children live with me in Heideveld.
“I was expecting to see her on her birthday because every year she comes to get her gift from me,” she sobs.
Asked how she was going to break the news to her grandkids, she burst into a fresh bout of tears.
“I will have to tell them one day,” was all she could say.
Labeeqa’s father, Dawood Brown, says he suspects she was attacked by someone she knew.
“I know my daughter, she would have fought back if someone was trying to rob her,” he says.
“I don’t believe this was gang-related because she is not a gangster.
“She must have been with someone she knows or else she would have run.
“ Ons gaan dit nie so los nie,” he added.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk says no arrests have been made.
“A murder case was registered for investigation, no arrest as yet,” he says.
