A young mother from Kreefgat is lucky to be alive after being struck by a stray bullet while standing in the SASSA line.
The 31-year-old woman, who asked not to be named, says she has been left traumatised after the shootout at the Heideveld Post Office on Monday.
According to witnesses, skollies arrived at the Post Office as mense queued to receive the R350 special grant and forced their way to the front of the line.
“The gangsters also come for the grant and will sommer tell the security they must go in first,” says a witness.
“One of the gangsters was inside with a gun and came out and other guys saw him and started shooting at him and he shot back.”
The sukkeling mother of two says she was sitting on the pavement when the skote went off.
“There was a woman who shouted for me to lay flat and the bullet hit me in my arm,” she says.
“There were so many skote I couldn’t even count and after the shooting I felt the warmth and realised the bullet was in my arm.
“They took me to Vanguard hospital where they took the bullet out.
“Another woman was also shot but she ran away.
“I am so upset that they shoot like that. You had to see the mothers running with their babies.”
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, confirms the incident.
“According to reports rival gangs were shooting at each other outside the post office.
“In the process two females sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a nearby hospital.
“The suspects are yet to be arrested after they fled the in an undisclosed direction.”
