A young woman nearly died after she was caught in a bloody fight between a married couple.
Nikita Smith was stabbed with a broken bottleneck by the wife, who was attacking her husband.
Nikita was admitted to Heideveld Day Hospital on Sunday with stab wounds to her head, breast, face, chest and arms.
She had been sitting with friends in Irvine Street, Manenberg when a woman wanted to hit her husband.
Nikita, who had been sitting next to the man, was caught in the violence and was beaten with the beer bottle instead.
Nikita’s aunt, Sharon du Plessis, says the bottle broke while the woman was hitting Nikita.
“She was sitting with her friends in the street when this woman, whom she knows, ran with a beer bottle towards her husband,” says Sharon.
“The man wanted to hit the woman also. Instead of hitting the man, she hit Nikita with the beer bottle.
“Nikita was left bleeding in the street and was rushed to Heideveld Day Hospital.”
She says they tried to lay a charge at Manenberg SAPS, but was told Nikita has to wait two weeks before her case can be registered.
“The doctor who treated her is away for two weeks so we have to wait for the J88 form,” says Sharon.
“We didn’t go to the police station thinking we need the form first. As we understand the man is now gone from the area.”
But police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut, says: “This is not procedure, as a case is registered shortly after it was reported.”
