Police say they are hunting a suspect who robbed and raped a woman in Mitchells Plain on Sunday.

The young woman was making her way to the bus terminus at Town Centre just before 7am, when she was ambushed by an unknown male as she was walking along Westpoort Drive in Portlands.

The suspect forced the 23-year-old woman to walk towards the bridge.

When they got under the bridge, the suspect allegedly raped her and robbed her of her money and tablet.

Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, confirmed a case of robbery and rape has been opened for investigation by Mitchells Plain SAPS.

“On Sunday at 6.45am, an alleged rape occurred on Westpoort Drive in Portlands, Mitchells Plain,” said Van Wyk.

“According to reports, the victim, a 23-year-woman, was walking on Westpoort Drive on her way to the bus terminus when she was accosted by an unknown suspect who forced her to walk underneath the bridge on the same road.

“It is alleged that the suspect raped the victim under the bridge and he robbed her of R400 in cash and he took her Lenovo tablet. No arrest has as yet been made and a case of rape and robbery was opened for investigation.”

Abie Isaacs, of the Mitchells Plain CPF, urged mense with information about the incident to contact SAPS.

“We are also asking our females to be vigilant. We have requested more police visibility specifically in the morning as winter is approaching,” says Isaacs.
