A shooting which left a Lentegeur mom dead has left her family shattered.
Verania Samuelson, 33, was visiting her friends on Monday evening when she was murdered and another person shot in the leg in Begonia Street.
When the Daily Voice visited her Tulip Street home, her parents Brenda and David Samuelson were still too broken-hearted to speak.
They asked their neighbour Carmen Collins, 48, to narrate what happened.
“There were a lot of shots and we could hear them as far as we were from the scene. Her parents were already sleeping,” says Carmen.
“I went to go call my son because he ran down the road following other people.
“Two people met up with my son and told him that Firdous had been killed. But he knew her as Verania and he asked who Firdous is, but when they explained, he came to tell me.”
Carmen adds that she had to break the sad news to the victim’s mom.
“I shouted outside the gate and asked her to come with me but she insisted I tell her what happened. My son told her that Verania was shot and killed.”
She says at the scene, they found Verania lying just outside the hokkie.
“There was a boy who was also shot but he was in the street. There were about 18 to 20 bullet casings at the scene,” adds Carmen.
She described the mom of a 14-year-old boy as someone who was always jolly.
“I treated her as my own daughter, she was never moody, always lovely and kind.
“The last thing she told my daughter on Monday was that she would see her on Tuesday, maybe.
“Like she could feel what was coming.”
SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Twigg says cases of murder and attempted murder were opened, while the circumstances were being investigated.
“The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
