TRAGIC: Wisdom Anyawu, 17
A Bonteheuwel High School matriculant has been stabbed to death before he could receive his results.
Wisdom Anyawu, 17, was knifed in the chest in Langa on Saturday morning and passed away at Vanguard Day Hospital at about 2am.
Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says a 21-year-old man has was arrested and detained on Sunday at 1.15pm.
“Once charged, the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder,” he says.
Unemployed mom, Thobeka Kadeni, says Wisdom had gone out to celebrate the New Year with friends when he was approached by his killer near the N2.
She says he was killed for his cigarette lighter.
“His friends came to say that he was stabbed by a known guy who had asked for a lighter.
“My son offered to light the cigarette for him but this boy demanded the lighter and attacked him,” says Thobeka.
“My son only took a few steps and fell.
“He was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately he didn’t make it.
“He had big dreams and was looking forward to changing our lives for the better.
“The pain is too deep, I can’t even see how I am going to move on or bury him.
“I have nothing, my savings are finished and we’ve been struggling since Covid started.”
He is survived by two younger siblings who will “miss his humble, mature personality”.
Thobeka wishes to bury her son in Centane in the Eastern Cape and is appealing for help. She can be contacted on 065 694 7565.
