A housing project in Manenberg was brought to a grinding halt on Monday as angry residents prevented workers from entering the site.
Shortly after 7am, residents formed a human chain around the development in Irvine Street, calling for Mayor Dan Plato to stiek uit.
The protest comes amid calls for a forensic audit into the allocation of houses in a new City of Cape Town development.
The Manenberg Action Group (MAG) say despite protests, marches and memorandums to Plato, their pleas for transparency have fallen on deaf ears.
“Today the people are gatvol so we made a human chain and we are stopping all the workers from coming in,” says MAG chairperson, Yusuf Gelderbloem.
“We have asked for transparency and to see who is on the list, but they have refused. Plato has also not acknowledged the memorandum so we are not leaving tot Plato uit stiek.”
Speaking to the Daily Voice on Monday, Plato said Mayco Member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, has received the memorandum.
“Booi and the project manager will meet with the group this afternoon to discuss their concerns. We hope that an amicable solution to the situation will be found,” the mayor said.
Gelderbloem says when questioned, Booi asked for proof of the allegations of corruption, but angry residents demanded to see the housing waiting list.
“They also asked us for a list of people who are questioning why they did not get houses and we will give that to them, but [today] we are stopping work again until they look into the lists.”
