STERN: Gang bosses not happy with killings. File photo
Gatvol gangsters in Manenberg have gone on the hunt for the notorious cat killer and warn that the perpetrators “will suffer the same fate” as the animals that have been mutilated.
This follows the shocking discovery of a tiny kitten that had been killed in Irvine Street on Wednesday morning.
According to community worker Abdul Karriem Adams, the death toll has now risen to 30 in Manenberg since 15 July.
Residents say patrols during the early hours of the morning, in the hopes of catching the killer, have been unsuccessful.
A 32-year-old member of the Hard Livings gang, who asked not to be named, says they are gatvol of the killings and that the gang bosses have tabled this issue at their weekly meeting.
He explains that the killing of cats is not a gang ritual.
“Die is nie ’n bende ding nie. Die is ’n siek besigheid en die persoon wat dit doen is siek in hulle koppe,” he says.
“We were on the lookout for them and if we catch them gaan ons hulle vrek maak.
“Our bosses talked about this at the weekly Sunday sitdown and they are not happy about it.
On Wednesday morning, a 68-year-old ouma says she got a skrik when she found a mutilated cat in her yard in Gamtoos Street before 5am.
The traumatised woman, who asked not to be named, says the cat was sliced open, disembowelled and flung into her yard.
“My son was leaving for work when we saw the cat lying here,” she says.
“It was so horrible to see how it was cut open and all its guts were laying out.”
The killings are being monitored by the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) who have offered a R5000 reward.
Spokesperson Allan Perrins says they will be approaching cat food companies to match the reward in the hopes of catching the perpetrators.
He says the bodies of two mutilated cats have been sent to the State Veterinary Pathologist at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture for official autopsies to be conducted.
