DOWNTOWN Cape Town came to standstill on Monday afternoon when a man jumped to his death off the 28th floor of a popular high-rise hotel.
A tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon when a man lost his life after reportedly jumping from the rooftop of Hotel Sky in Cape Town.
The location on Lower Long Street, between Walter Sisulu Avenue and Wharf Street was quickly closed down by authorities to process the scene.
The shocking event has prompted an investigation by local authorities, raising urgent questions about safety measures at the popular tourist destination.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the incident and said the man's body was found in the afternoon, just before 4pm.
He reported: “A post-mortem will be conducted to determine race, age and cause of death. An inquest was registered for investigation.
“Crime scene experts and Cape Town Central SAPS detectives are currently on the scene at the mentioned address combing the area for clues.”
Group Director for Sales and Marketing, Inge Dykman, told SmileFM that the man says the man was a walk-in patron.
She explained that he made his way to the 28th floor, where he managed to climb over all the balustrades and jumped to his death.
Managing Director Paul Kelly added in a statement that the company is devastated by this unexpected event and has extended its heartfelt condolences to the individual’s family and loved ones during this time of profound loss.
