A Kraaifontein resident has been left reeling in shock after he found a dead dog hanging from his gate on Tuesday morning.
Homeowner Rawhol Brinkhuis, 34, believes the pavement special male dog was trying to get to his bitches who are in heat at the moment.
“The dogs were going on like crazy during the course of the night as the male dog wanted to get to my two female dogs. It’s mos mating season now,” he explains.
“The dog wanted to jump into our yard, but his paw got stuck in the gate.
“As he was hanging, other dogs in the street started biting him and he died. You can see all the blood around him.
“I am just glad the police and SPCA could assist in removing the dog,” Rawhol says.
Spokesperson for SPCA of Good Hope, Belinda Abraham says the incident could have been prevented.
“The owner of the property was deeply distressed by the incident and will be bringing his females in for sterilisation after lockdown,” she says.
“It is common for unneutered males to roam in their area when females are in season.”
She says one male dog can impregnate several bitches and for this reason males should be sterilised too.
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirmed the incident.
“The circumstances surrounding the death of a dog in Rusticana Avenue, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein was investigated," Traut says.
“The dog was noticed hanging from a residential gate at around 8am on Tuesday by Kraaifontein SAPS members.
“Members contacted the SPCA who arrived and removed the dog.”
