About 50 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds stand a chance of getting free driving lessons this month with the help of the Steenberg Community Forum.

The forum has partnered with One Stop Driving School to offer free learners classes.

This comes at a time when unemployment hits many households countrywide and the chairperson for the forum, Peter Martin, says this is their continuous attempt to equip youth with skills that are in demand in the work environment.

Peter says: “The forum believes that the development of the youth will ultimately bring improvement and change in poor communities.

“With this in mind, the forum has approached One Stop Driving School to present free learners classes for unemployed youth between the age of 18 and 35.

“Depending on the response received and success of the programme, the programme will be expanded.

“They will only be required to pay for writing the learners examination at the Traffic Department.”

The driving school’s owner André Jonas says this is an opportunity for them to give back and play a role in reducing socio-economic challenges facing the youth.

He says the high number of applications received within a few days of advertising the opportunity on social media is proof that there is a need for interventions to address unemployment.

“The advertisement was only posted on the weekend and we have received about 90 applications and we can only accommodate up to 50 at this moment,” he says.

“It is so sad we have to scale it down.

“This is our first attempt, if it becomes a success, we are looking at taking half of those learners to the next step which is going to sponsor their driving lessons.”
