Cops arrested a 21-year-old suspect within hours after the murder.
Police say the 16-year-old boy from Bishop Lavis was gunned down shortly after appearing in court on charges of drug possession.
According to a shocked resident who was on the scene, the incident happened shortly after 1pm in Myrtle Road.
“I passed there after 1pm and saw all the police vehicles. I went over to see and there the boy was lying in the street and they covered his body. They say he was coming from court and it had something to do with gangsters,” says the resident, who asked not to be named.
Captain FC van Wyk says the victim appeared in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court on a possession of drugs charge and was walking home when he was shot.
“He was shot in front of Disa Court in Myrtle Road. A murder case has been opened. The shooting is believed to be gang-related.”
A few hours later, police arrested a 21-year-old man for the murder.
Van Wyk says the alleged killer is expected to appear in Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court on Friday.
