Langa’s murder rate has contributed to more than 55 percent of the total number of murders in Cape Town’s police cluster.
The shocking statistic was revealed during this weekend’s Policing Needs and Priorities workshop hosted by the Western Cape Community Safety Department in Salt River.
Various safety groups and law enforcement agencies within the Cape Town policing cluster attended the two-day talks.
The department’s latest crime statistics revealed the Langa police precinct has contributed to more than half of the total number of murder cases in the Cape Town police cluster over the past five years, reports EWN.
Overall the murder rate in Langa has dropped since 2011, from 65 murders to 43 during the 2014/2015 period.
However, the township still accounts for almost 55 percent of murders in the cluster.
It’s also still the most notorious murder hotspot out of the nine areas within the Cape Town cluster.
The overall murder rate has decreased by 17 percent between 2010 and 2015.
During the workshop, neighbourhood watch groups and other community safety groups emphasised the need for better policing resources and training.
