The National, Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) has vowed to kick off its national programme of action with members picketing at all National Health Laboratories Service (NHLS) centres tomorrow (Friday) and hospitals around the country as they alleged that they are being subjected to risk of Covid-19 infections.
Nehawu spokesperson Khaya Xaba told Independent Media on Wednesday that the picketing would take place outside the NHLS gates in all provinces.
“We will expand to other sectors as well, people will on Monday be applying for the day-off for Tuesday. There will be lunchtime pickets leading up to the national strike on 3 September,” he said.
He added that Friday’s strike action would also affect operations at the laboratories and in many hospitals.
“They will not be working from Friday. This would disturb testing (for Covid-19) because the employer does not want to listen to us. We are forcing the employer to give us what we want.”
