Ruiters, 30, emerged from court holding cells with her newborn baby girl wrapped in a pink and purple Hello Kitty blanket.
She handed the baby to her mother before facing the presiding officer in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.
Meanwhile, shocking details have emerged about the injuries inflicted upon little Jeremiah Ruiters.
Ruiters and her 26-year-old boyfriend Ameerudien Peters were applying for bail.
Peters is charged with
murder and rape.
Jeremiah was beaten, raped and stabbed to death at his home in Salmander Square, Factreton, in June.
State prosecutor Adiel Jansen asked Ruiters whether she knew anything about Jeremiah’s wounds.
The mother mentioned a fractured arm and finger operation, before Jansen dropped a bombshell.
TRIAL: Abigail Ruiters charged with murder and neglect
Jansen said: “An initial observation by the pathologist was: visible bite marks to Jeremiah’s lips and tongue. He had a cracked skull and swelling on his brain. He had three broken ribs to his left side and healing ribs which were broken or cracked on his right side.
"He had bite marks to his torso (neck to pelvis) and bladder. He had bite marks on his penis,
testicles and his anus was torn, an old and fresh wound. He sustained blunt force trauma to his spine.”
Ruiters then suddenly remembered seeing something on her son’s penis.
She said: “The morning of his death when I changed him, I did see something on the top of his penis. It was a scab already and I didn’t know what it was, if it was a nappy rash or whatever.”
Jansen then implied that Ruiters either knew of the injuries because she inflicted it, or she was trying to cover up for someone else.
The court was adjourned after Ruiters broke down, and for her to breastfeed her baby.
The matter will resume on 25 October.
