The man, who allegedly killed a child and her nanny in a hit and run incident AND who was later arrested for being in possession of drugs worth nearly R9 million, has been released on bail for a second time.
Mogamat Rafiek Hayners, 24, was out on R5 000 bail after allegedly killing little Shaylynn Arendse, six, of Strandfontein and Maureen Abrahams, 67, of Lotus River, on 27 September.
He was nabbed on 13 November by the Hawks at a storage facility in Somerset West for allegedly being in possession of tik and mandrax worth R8.9 million and being part of a syndicate.
Hayners and three other suspects appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate's Court on 7 December on drug-related charges and were each granted bail of R50 000.
Hawks spokesman, Captain Philani Nkwalase, confirmed: “Mogamat Rafiek Hayners, 24, Russel Stanton Jonathan, 53, Mark Overmeyer, 51, and Zaynisa Alfoz, 45, appeared at Somerset West Magistrate's Court last Friday and were granted R50 000 bail each with stringent bail conditions.
KILLED: Maureen Abrahams
“All suspects were allegedly linked to the drug bust at a storage facility in Somerset west on 13 November.”
Nkwalase says the four will have to report to their nearest police stations every Monday and Wednesday and will need to inform cops of their whereabouts.
Their passports have also been confiscated.
Hayners had been out on R5000 bail after he was arrested on charges of culpable homicide.
Prosecutors are set to prove that Hayners was driving a white VW Golf when he jumped a red robot on the corner of Strandfontein Road and 5th Avenue and struck Shaylynn and Maureen while they stood on the pavement.
The two were on their way to a nearby shop.
VICTIM: Shaylynn Arendse, 6
The Golf driver fled the scene and the car was later found abandoned at the residence of a family member of Hayners’s in Hanover Park.
Hayners handed himself over to police four days later on 1 October.
He is expected to appear at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on culpable homicide charges.
After Hayners’s arrest in Somerset West, cops traced Jonathan to his residence in Hanover Park and arrested him.
Alfoz was apprehended soon thereafter while Overmeyer was traced with the assistance of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit.
Meanwhile, Shaylynn’s ouma, Brenda Tommy, says the family had heard of Hayners being granted bail of R50 000 and says they are disappointed that the justice system has failed them again.
The family has also formed a support group on the Facebook page, Friends of Shaylynn Arendse & Maureen Abrahams.
