HIT: Junior Mafia boss Junaid Arendse 'killed out of jealously'

A Cape Flats gang boss and two other alleged skollies have been wiped out in a night of bloody shootings that also left one other man injured.
The shooting of Junaid Arendse, 26, the leader of the Junior Mafias in Eastridge, Mitchells Plain, was witnessed by his wife of two months.

Police say two men, both 18 years old, have been arrested for his murder.

The 26-year-old victim’s widow tells the Daily Voice Junaid and his friend, Tariq Davids, 28, were chatting to their killer moments before the shooting in Malva Street, Eastridge.

Junaid was shot three times, while Tariq was shot eight times as he tried to flee.

The two lay metres apart from each other in the street when cops arrived at the scene just after 6pm on Monday.

The 23-year-old widow, who asked not to be identified, believes the two were killed out of jealousy.

The woman says Junaid and Tariq were talking to a group of men in the street, and that her husband had asked one of the men to stop harassing his 21-year-old brother.

Speaking from their home in Malva Street yesterday, the shaken young widow describes how she watched in horror as her husband was gunned down.

“He was standing and talking to these guys and when he turned around, these other men came from behind and one person he was also talking to also started shooting,” she says.

“They shot him and his friend, Tariq. Both of them were standing and talking.

“Junaid was shot three times in the head, chest and neck. Tariq ran to me as I tried to run to Junaid.”

She admits Junaid was a prominent gang member in Eastridge.

“This is not gang-related; there are no gang fights at the moment, this is just plain jealousy,” the grieving widow says, sobbing.

Arendse’s 69-year-old ouma adds: “He was part of the Junior Mafia gang, we cannot deny it, but there was no trouble. They [killers] were troubling his brother to get to him.

“He spoke nicely to them and even asked why they are doing this.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut says two cases of murder are being investigated.

“Two suspects, both aged 18, were arrested and are due to make a court appearance in Mitchells Plain once they have been charged,” he says.

About an hour before the double murder, cops were called to Cuckoo Street, in Rocklands, where the body of suspected School Boy gangster, Donovan Pullen, was found.

His family was not available for comment yesterday.

Traut says: “A 20-year-old man was shot and killed in Cuckoo Road, Rocklands by an unknown suspect who is yet to be arrested.

“During the same incident an adult male was shot and wounded and later treated in hospital.

“The circumstances surrounding these cases are being investigated.”
