Jarred Fernandez from Steenberg had high hopes of becoming a professional soccer player. But his dreams were shattered when he was diagnosed with cancer.
The 15-year-old Steenberg High School pupil now has to undergo a hip replacement operation because aggressive chemotherapy caused his bones to become brittle.
Jarred was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 12 years old.
The news devastated his family, but the boy refused to let the life-threatening illness get him down.
It also helps to have really good brasse, who CARRY Jarred to school when he can’t walk.
Despite his illness, the Grade 8 soccer star says he dreams of getting back on the pitch.
His mom, Bridgette Fernandez, says she works extra shifts to be able to sustain her family of three.
“Jarred was once a top soccer player of his team and when he got sick, his dreams crashed because he wasn’t able to play any longer,” the single mom says.
“He was on chemotherapy for three years and finished his last session last month.
“The chemo caused both his hips to snap and he now needs a double hip replacement to be done by end of September this year.
Bridgette says Jarred gets emotional when he sees his friends playing soccer.
“Sometimes he cries to play soccer, and says ‘Mommy, I wish I could just run with the ball again like I used to, I just want to be normal again’.”
Local DJs and event planners have now teamed up to raise funds for his operation, which will cost a whopping R160 000.
On 25 August, DJs Nivan Bell, Portia, MD, Saan and Richie, among others, will hold a disco fundraiser for Jarred.
The jol is taking place at the Protea Hall opposite Zwaanswyk High School in Retreat.
Entry will be R60 and a cash bar and full kitchen will be available.
Tickets can be obtained on 082 948 3478.
