Shoppers at the Cavendish Square Mall got a skrik when a store was robbed in broad daylight on Monday.
Just before 10am, staff and shoppers at the iStore were ambushed by three men, one of whom was armed with a firearm.
The suspects managed to rob the store of an undisclosed amount of cellphones and laptops.
The mall says no shots were fired and no one was injured during the robbery.
The Public Relations and Events Co-ordinator for Cavendish Square, Zuhrah Davids, says security guards immediately responded.
“Cavendish Square confirms that an armed robbery occurred at the mall on Monday, 17 June [about] 9.40am. No tenants or shoppers were harmed during the incident. The centre’s security immediately responded to the scene and notified the South African Police Services.
“The safety and security of the shoppers and tenants is of utmost importance to Cavendish Square Centre Management and they are working with SAPS to assist with the investigation. The centre has been secured and is trading as normal,” Davids said.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirmed the incident and says the suspects fled in a VW Golf 5.
“Please be advised that a case of business robbery has been opened for investigation after an incident that occurred Monday morning at a cellular phone shop in a mall in Claremont.
“According to reports three men, one armed with a firearm entered the shop and threatened the victims with a firearm. The suspects fled the scene with cellular phones and laptops in a VW Golf 5.
“Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation with no arrests so far,” Rwexana said.
