Five armed robbers have ransacked and robbed the house of a well-known Cape Flats imam while his son and his family were at home.

On Sunday just before 4pm, robbers kicked down the door of Imam Gasant Moos’ Lansdowne home while his son, Maahier, was inside with his wife and young children.

The thugs gunpointed Maahier when he caught them in the act, and he managed to get away to call for help. His family was elsewhere in the large house.

Two cellphones, bank cards and an undisclosed amount of money were taken.

Maahier and his family were not harmed during the attack.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, says the suspects may have fled on foot and it is not clear whether the skelms arrived in a vehicle, which may have been waiting for them elsewhere.

“The suspects entered the house and when confronted, pointed a firearm at the complainant (Maahier)," he says.

“The complainant then fled the scene looking for help."

“The suspects continued ransacking his house. Household goods were taken.

“It is unclear whether the suspects fled on foot or whether a vehicle was used.”

Swartbooi said no arrests have been made.

Imam Gasant Moos says: “I hereby wish to confirm that on Sunday afternoon at around 3.40pm, five armed men broke their way into our home, by kicking down the door.

“Once inside and within a few minutes they took a number of valuable items.

“Alhamdulillah, there were no injuries and we thank Allah SWT for keeping my son, Maahier and his family, who were home at the time, safe.

“On behalf of my family we would like to thank the broader community for their support and solidarity.”
