Murder accused Corrine Jackson claims her girlfriend Nadine Esterhuizen attacked her first in a fit of jealousy and she acted in self-defence when she stabbed the 18-year-old to death.
More than two years after the gruesome murder, Jackson, 23, is finally going on trial in the Mitchells Plain Regional Court on Thursday.
In December, the State rejected a plea statement from Jackson.
The State is set to prove that on 27 September 2017, Jackson killed Nadine at her sister’s rented house in Colorado Park, after the teen broke up with her.
It is alleged Jackson was abusive and Nadine had previously taken out a protection order against her.
However, Jackson, who is out on R5000 bail, denies these accusations.
She told Daily Voice she and Nadine were engaged to be married and they had an argument on that fateful day.
PROPOSAL: Couple was engaged to be married
The lesbian lovers, both from Mitchells Plain, had been chatting on WhatsApp, but Jackson says when she took too long to reply, Nadine accused her of “flirting with other girls”.
She claims one of Nadine’s friends was sliding into her DMs (direct messages).
Jackson sent the Daily Voice a voice note, allegedly from Nadine, in which a woman can be heard saying: “You could have said no at least. Urggh, nevermind, it’s typical, you won’t say no to any girl, it’s OK, you can chat to whoever you want.”
When Jackson tried to defend herself, the woman says:“Then let me check for myself. Bring your phone then and get done.”
Jackson is heard saying: “ Yoh, you’re rude. It’s then your friend. She asked me for my number on Facebook,” before calling Nadine “jealous as f***”.
Jackson claims Nadine then became upset when she posted a memory of an ex-girlfriend on her Facebook timeline.
In another voice note, purportedly from Nadine, a woman’s voice can be heard saying: “You f***ing made me moody by putting that * *** up on your status, so don’t start with me today. Just get your ass here now and f***ing run.”
According to Jackson, they met at a corner shop in Mitchells Plain.
“I had a bag full of sweets. Like, who goes to a murder with a bag full of sweets?” she says.
She claims they headed to Colorado Park where they watched Cartoon Network and had “k** lekker sex about four times”.
She says Nadine made tuna salad and they ate but when she wanted to leave, Nadine became suspicious as it was still early.
‘INITIATED ATTACK’: Nadine Esterhuizen, 18
“Just before I left, Nadine then pulled out a knife and I honestly thought she was joking.
“She asked me very nicely, with a knife in her hand, I must tell her now whether or not I am cheating on her and * ***ng other kinnes. And then she stabbed me in the chest,” she says.
She claims they fought for the knife and when Nadine tried to stab her again, the knife went into her hand and the tip into her neck.
She reacted by grabbing a knife on the counter.
She says during the scuffle, she stabbed Nadine in the neck and the teen slumped against the back door.
Jackson says she could not explain the 21 stab wounds that were found on Nadine’s body, or the fact that the teen’s neck was nearly severed.
“It was like everything went on pause. I just kept apologising over and over again. She told me she loved me,” she says.
“She tried to speak to me but she couldn’t. She was struggling to breathe so I laid her down. I was trying to stop the bleeding with a cloth.”
Jackson says when she heard Nadine’s brother-in-law arriving, she “feared for her safety” and fled into the bathroom and locked it.
This is where she was later found with two bloody knives.
“She was lying there alive. I left her alive,” Jackson claims.
