The five accused in the Zahnia Woodward murder trial will all be taking the stand in their own defence, the court heard on Wednesday.
Christopher “Trompie” September, Larry Johnson, Tashwill Kriel, Morne May and Mirriam Johnson face charges of murder, attempted murder and obstruction of justice.
Little Zahnia was shot in the head during a drive-by shooting in Ocean View in December 2016.
First on the stand was September, 33, who claimed he had been in Hout Bay on that fateful day and was only made aware of the shooting when a man called Timer, who was allegedly the target of the shooting, sent him “ugly” voice notes on WhatsApp.
“He and three other people on the phone shouted at me, telling me they had seen me in the car and I had killed a baby,” September testified.
“I was not there and I told them this. They threatened to come to my house and kill my family and I decided to leave Hout Bay.”
He said on the day of the shooting, Larry had instructed him to take Larry’s white VW Golf to Sun Valley Mall, where he handed it to two men unknown to him in exchange for Larry’s purple VW Golf.
DENY: Christopher September
Despite showing the court a JFK tattoo on his arm, September insisted he was not a skollie.
“I did it when I was at school, I am not a gangster,” he said.
He then claimed Timer and Zahnia’s father Bradley Robyn were both members of the Junky Funky gang.
Bradley rose from his seat in the gallery and told the judge: “You can come and check my body for tattoos. I am not a gangster.”
Henney told him to sit down.
September also denied dropping guns at Mirriam’s house with a man called Jesus. “I don’t know Jesus and I was never at that house on the day of the shooting.”
The case continues.
