A well-known defence lawyer, known to have defended several underworld figures, has been gunned down in Khayelitsha.
David Mbazwana, 38, was shot multiple times in broad daylight by unknown suspects in front of his sister at the Eiland Informal Settlement in Makhaza.
He was shot in front of a shop which is believed to be his.
Mbazwana is the third high-profile defence lawyer to be murdered in less than five years.
Advocate Pete Mihalik, 50, was shot in his car outside his children’s school in Green Point in October last year.
Mihalik’s eight-year-old son was injured.
In November 2016, Noorudien Hassan was shot in his car outside a house in Lansdowne.
Mbazwana previously represented Grant Veroni, the director of The Security Group (TSG) which has been linked to controversial businessman Nafiz Modack and Colin Booysen, the brother of alleged Sexy Boy gang leader Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen.
Mbazwana also represented Modack’s mother, Ruwaida Modack, two weeks ago when they were arrested by the Hawks on charges of corruption.
She is out on R5 000 bail.
Nafiz Modack did not want to comment on Mbazwana’s murder yesterday.
Mbazwana was also the initial lawyer for Linda Ntulo, the man accused of killing Khayelitsha mother Aviwe Jam Jam and dumping her body in Athlone in 2017. The couple had a two-year-old son together.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk says Mbazwana died on his way to hospital.
“A case of murder has been registered for investigation at Harare SAPS. No arrest has been made as yet.”
