A Heideveld oupa has been convicted by the Athlone Magistrates Court of animal cruelty for failing to adhere to warnings issued by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA about the living conditions of his dogs.
In a statement the animal welfare organisation said David Jonathan Carelse, 62, pleaded guilty to charges brought against him in terms of the Animals Protection Act after multiple inspections revealed his continued failure to provide for the welfare of his dogs.
They explained that despite being issued with multiple warnings and repeated follow-up inspections over the course of several weeks, Carelse failed to comply with the instructions issued by the SPCA.
The SPCA added: "He failed to provide adequate food, veterinary care, or proper shelter, and he continued to keep the animals in inhumane conditions. A warrant was obtained, and on 5 December 2023, the dogs were seized from the property with the assistance of the South African Police Service."
Following his arrest and prosecution, Carelse was sentenced to a fine of R2 000 or two months’ imprisonment, which was suspended for three years. In addition, the court imposed a three-year ban prohibiting him from owning or having custody of any animals.
Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse says: “The courts are recognising the seriousness of these crimes, and that sends a powerful warning to anyone who neglects or abuses an animal."
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA remains committed to protecting animals from cruelty and neglect and will continue to pursue justice on their behalf.
