A family in the small community of Montevideo on the Cape Flats is traumatised after a well-known resident allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend on Tuesday.
Police say the couple’s 16-year-old daughter was also hit in the foot before the man fled the scene.
According to neighbours, Wayne Lawrence, 40, had been waiting outside the home of his ex, Angela “Angie” Marinus, 36, on Monday night at about 10pm.
Angela had pulled up at the Nevada Street home with their daughter in the front passenger seat.
Angela was shot twice - in the head and in the neck - the second bullet went through her and hit their daughter in the foot.
The mother succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the teen was rushed to hospital, where she was supposed to have surgery on Tuesday afternoon.
Neighbours who rushed outside say they were sickened by the bloody scene that greeted them.
One resident who declined to be named says the couple had grown up together in the area.
“On the outside, they had been a perfect couple, but he was jealous and he abused her. That is why she had left him,” said the shocked woman.
Another neighbour saw Lawrence standing in Angela’s driveway.
As she got out of her car, he allegedly drew a gun and shot her before running off.
The residents took police to his home in neighbouring Montana, but he apparently saw them coming and jumped over the fence in his backyard and ran off.
He was last seen crossing Robert Sobukwe Drive and entering the 8ste Laan informal settlement in Valhalla Park.
Angela’s family was not available for comment, but according to a friend, they are devastated.
