Gift of the Givers volunteers, along with staff from a fast food restaurant, brought some happiness to a Hanover Park crèche on Tuesday as some kids enjoyed take-outs for the first time.
The Our Lady of the Rosary Crèche at the Catholic Church buzzed with excitement yesterday as more than 100 eager laaities waited for the volunteers to arrive with their burgers and chips at their annual Christmas party.
Principal Jane Manuel says for the second time the school had teamed up with parents to host the party.
“Last year I met Ali Sablay of the Gift of the Givers and he spoke to me about what the crèche needs,” says Manuel. “We have over 100 children and we are the cheapest crèche in Hanover Park, so sometimes we struggle because we look after underprivileged children.
“He brought in Faathiel Fredericks from [the sponsors] and now every year they bring [meals].
WAIT: Excited laaities
“It is always nice to see children so happy and some of them eating [take-out meals] for the first time.”
Among them was five-year-old Farrah Bux who sat quietly.
“This is my first happiness,” she said cutely as she chowed her burger.
Fredericks adds: “A [meal] costs about R35 now and many children take it for granted, but there are many children whose parents just cannot afford it so it’s nice to see how excited they get.”
