Patrolling members of Steenberg SAPS had their hands full when two brazen suspects started shooting at them from a larney vehicle on Tuesday morning near a mosque.
Just after 9am, officers were conducting patrols in Sonata Street when they noticed a Mercedes Benz approaching.
The suspects then brazenly started shooting at the cop car and fled, damaging the vehicle’s bumper.
The wakker cops immediately gave chase and managed to apprehend the suspects after they crashed the Merc and tried to flee on foot.
The men were caught and arrested and will be appearing in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut, says a 9mm pistol was recovered from the two suspects, aged 27 and 35.
“At around 9.15am, the members were busy with patrols in Sonata Street, Steenberg when the occupants of a Mercedes Benz shot at the police vehicle, damaging the one fender.
“The police officers pursued the fleeing suspects who crashed their vehicle and fled further on foot. Their freedom was short lived as they both were arrested, and found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol and ammunition,” Traut said.
He said the Merc had been reported as stolen.
“The investigation revealed that the Mercedes Benz was reported stolen in Goodwood earlier this month.
“The two suspects, aged 27 and 35, are due to make a court appearance in Wynberg on charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a stolen vehicle and malicious damage to property,” Traut said.
