Two passengers travelling in a taxi were shot dead on Monday morning after gunmen opened fire on the vehicle in Nyanga.

A man believed to be in his forties and a woman in her thirties died on the scene, while witnesses say a sangoma and a child accompanying the deceased were left shaken but uninjured in the blue Toyota Tazz they were travelling in.

Witnesses at the scene said more than 10 shots were fired at the taxi after a white Toyota Avanza blocked the car’s path on the corner of 6th Avenue and Zwelitsha Drive.

Community policing forum chairperson Martin Makhasi tells the Daily Voice the shooting happened in full view of the public.

He says, according to the community, the occupants of the taxi were apparently witnesses in a case and were on their way to court.

“From witnesses at the incident, we learned that the passengers were heading to court, but this is unconfirmed at this stage,” says Makhasi.

“A white Toyota Avanza had apparently pulled up and blocked the blue Tazz with the victims in it on the corner of 6th Avenue and Zwelitsha Drive.

“Then there was lots of gunfire. Nobody at the scene could confirm the number of shooters in the white Avanza.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed a double murder case has been opened for investigation.

“According to reports, two people, a man, about 40 years old and a woman in her thirties, were shot and fatally wounded inside a vehicle in Nyanga,” she says.

“The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage.”
