SHOCKING INCIDENT: Security guard shot during heist in Panorama
A security guard was killed and another one shot and wounded in an attempted cash-in transit heist in Panorama on Wednesday morning.
The guard, who drove the cash van, had died after he was shot and ploughed into the garage of a nearby home as he tried to flee from the skelms who were allegedly armed with assault rifles.
According to a source, the van arrived at Welgelegen Spar in Malmesbury Road shortly before 7am.
One of the three guards entered the store with a cash box to make a collection when he was confronted by a skelm.
“The first guard was held at gunpoint and forced into the store where they held up the store manager and made him empty the safe and took over R40 000.
“When the first guard did not come out the second one went in to look and the robbers opened fire on him, shooting him multiple times.”
The source says skelms outside the store then rammed into the cash van using a black Opel Corsa bakkie.
“The (cash van) driver drove away but crashed into the garage of a nearby house.
“It is not clear yet how he was shot through the (armoured) vehicle. The suspects left the bakkie on the scene.”
Police say the suspects fled in a white VW Golf GTi.
Spar spokesperson Shakeel Allie confirms the robbery and says: “They got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. No staff in the store were hurt, no damage to the store.”
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says cops have launched a manhunt for the unknown suspects.
She said the black Corsa bakkie was reported stolen in Khayelitsha in June.
“Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and business robbery.”
