Elsies River Police are investigating a culpable homicide case after a security guard was killed by a delivery truck.
The 33-year-old man was stationed at the Clarke Estate Shoprite.
He died while trying to assist a delivery truck on Tuesday.
A witness, Elton Petersen, says that the man was crushed by the truck ramp as it opened.
“It’s my understanding that he guided the truck and the heavy material behind the truck fell on him.
“This is really sad and the entire community is saddened by this because he was a nice person, who always greeted with a smile,” he explains.
“He was always talking about soccer, I’m sure everyone is going to miss his presence at Shoprite.
“He died helping a truck driver, and that was really his personality, he loved assisting everyone.”
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says: “The circumstances surrounding the death of a 33-year-old man on Tuesday at about 3.30pm are under investigation.
“Elsies River Police attended a crime scene at a local retail store, and upon arrival they found the body of an unknown man lying on the ground.
“The victim was declared deceased by the medical personnel. Elsies River police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Shoprite said in a statement: “The supermarket chain wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the guard who tragically lost his life.”
