“ Die vark wil nogal nie vrek gaan nie.”
These were the chilling words a pensioner heard as three men tried to burn him alive.
Glenwyn ‘Roy’ Southgate, 66, from Retreat was taking a walk to Blue Route Mall on Sunday, 9 September, when he was ambushed by three skelms just after 8am in Flora Road at the railway crossing.
His devastated wife, Denise, 65, says she was away on holiday when she got a call about the attack from a neighbour, who had found Glenwyn and rushed him to hospital.

“He told me the guys said ‘good morning, pa’ and he still responded ‘good morning to you too’ before they attacked him,” she says.
“He was on his way to the ATM to get money to fix the car. That’s why he was walking that day.
“They weren’t out to rob, they were out to murder. They robbed him of his cross, phone and wedding ring.
“They still wanted to take his shoes and threw his false teeth aside. They then threw a liquid on him and lit a match and threw it on him.
“He burnt on his left side, from his ear right down, and then they said, ‘ die vark wil nogal nie vrek gaan nie, ons gooi sommer nog op’,” Denise explains angrily.
ATTACK: Roy’s head wounds.
She says her hubby is in constant pain and if his checkup at hospital does not go smoothly he may be admitted to the Tygerberg Hospital’s Burn Unit.
“Roy said he was just praying for God to help him stand up. I am just glad he’s alive,” Denise adds.
Police spokesperson, Siyabulelo Malo confirmed the incident but says only two suspects were involved.
