DREAM: Saeed Diedericks, 10, vannie Parkwood DREAM: Saeed Diedericks, 10, vannie Parkwood
A young soccer star from Parkwood hopes to play at the international Iber Cup 2018 in July, but needs your help to raise R30 000 to get him to Portugal.
The prestigious Iber Cup is one of the largest youth football tournaments in the world with about 40 000 boys participating in the week-long event.
Saeed Diedericks, 10, known as ‘Little Messi’ in his community is excited about his trip to Estoril, to play against some of the best up and coming talent from over 80 countries.
His proud father, Moulana Igshaan Diedericks, says he cannot express his pride for his son but says fundraising efforts have not been too rewarding.
“I am extremely proud of Saeed, he is really dedicated at such a young age,” says the dad.
“At the age of five I saw his potential as I myself played soccer back then. We have had fundraisers, but it’s not very successful.
“We held an eat and treat and many times people promise to help or donate but end up disappointing us. We only have R10 000 so far and July is around the corner.”
Saeed, who currently plays for the Fish Hoek Ubuntu Club, was named footballer of the year in 2017.
“I always teach him to be humble as he has received so much attention from a young age. Many times people just want to take his hand or say something to him after a game. He is really excited, but keeps asking whether his money is full yet.
“Last year, he was named footballer of the year across all teams from under 10 to under 18,” Moulana Igshaan says proudly.
