MURDERED: Juniell Nellas, 27
Police are investigating the murder of a known gangster who was shot in Bonteheuwel on Wednesday night.
Juniell Nellas, 27, was attacked in his Loganberry Street home at 10.20pm before running out into the road, collapsing and dying as he waited for an ambulance.
A 34-year-old resident said: “Juniell was a member of the Stupa Boys gang but he was a father and it is sad to see another person shot here in Bontas.
“He was in his house when they shot him and he ran out in the road and was lying there for a lekker tydjie while people called for the ambulance. By the time they came, he was already dead.”
The resident added Juniell was shot in the chest and he suspects it was by rival gang members.
“I’ve lost count of all the gangs here in the area and they are all shooting at each other almost every day.
“You can see it does not matter where they are. The gangsters could have killed his family or anybody else that was close.
“The people here are so used to hearing gunshots that they do not even skrik anymore, unless it’s right by their house.
“We hear shots and just wait to see if somebody is dead.”
Ward 50 Councillor Angus McKenzie says although the shooting was gang-related, he expressed his sadness for the loss of life.
“While the loss of any life is tragic and a heartbreaking experience to which we send our deepest condolences to the families, let us never forget the terror these individuals bestow upon our communities,” he says.
“We are indeed thankful that it was not an innocent person killed in this instance, yet concern still remains now for a threat of retaliation.
“Our teams will monitor this situation extremely closely.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the shooting and says Bishop Lavis are investigating a case of murder.
“Bishop Lavis Police attended to a complaint of a shooting incident and upon arrival on the scene found the victim, a 27-year-old male, with a gunshot wound to the chest.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.”
The sergeant added that the suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made.
When the Daily Voice visited the scene, Juniell’s family were unavailable to give comment.
