TARGET: Lentegeur Post Office

A fourth post office in Cape Town has been robbed in the space of a week.

In the latest incident, the Lentegeur Post Office in Mitchells Plain was burgled.

The branch situated in Merrydale Avenue was looted by skelms who broke in around 3am on Thursday.

According to staff, a microwave and computers were stolen during the break-in.

“It is still unclear how they entered, but we suspect [via] the roof,” said the worker.

The post office, which is usually busy with people queuing for the R350 Covid relief grant, had to be closed and people sent home.

WRECKED: Microwave and computers were stolen

Post Office spokesperson Johan Kruger said: “We can confirm the incident. Police are investigating and the post office is closed until they have concluded their investigation. We expect that this will be (today).”

This was the fourth post office robbery in a week.

Last Wednesday, the Du Noon Post Office was robbed, but fortunately the Western Cape Flying Squad and the K9 Unit swooped on the getaway vehicle on the N1.

Four men and a woman were arrested with three unlicensed firearms, ammunition and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The previous day, arme pensioners were left traumatised after armed skelms stormed the Belhar and Bishop Lavis branches, robbing them of welfare cash.

The police’s Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said a case of burglary is under investigation following the Lentegeur incident.

“A case of burglary is currently under investigation by Lentegeur police after a break-in occurred at the Lentegeur Post Office situated in Merrydale Avenue on Thursday at 3am,” she said.

“At the time that the case was registered, it was unknown if anything was taken from the premises.”
