The Revelation Church of God in Cape Town on Sunday provided food parcels to 130 families in Nyanga’s Barcelona informal settlement.
They also gave food parcels and bags full of clothes to an orphanage which shelters 33 children, from as young as two months old.
The leader of the church in the province, Luvo Vayisi, said the role of the church is to be involved in people’s lives in every way it can.
“It is a tradition that the church understands the difficulties faced by the people,” he says.
“The role of the church is here to assist communities, not only on the soul, but holistically, including being there at times like these, when our country faces a pandemic.”
He said ubuntu will unite people.
The food parcels contained potatoes, rice, cooking oil, maize meal, porridge, pilchard, flour, samp, washing powder, and baked beans.

Julius Bonani, 76, who runs the orphanage in Barcelona says they are grateful.
“I named the place Unako because it means ‘God can’ and today I am shown that God indeed can deliver,” he says, holding back tears.
“I want to give the children a better chance in life like every other child.
“I am happy that we received so much support from the church.”
Boniswa Sinawe, who received a food parcel, said: “There will definitely be a difference now at home and this happened when people were asking what is the role of the church.
“This shows that churches are not standing folding arms, but are working behind the scene.”
