With Christmas just one week away, brazen skelms decided to do their last-minute “shopping” by robbing the local Ackermans in Hanover Park.

Staff at the store, situated in the Lansdowne Corner Mall, were ambushed by five armed men on Tuesday just before 6pm.

The men entered the store pretending to be customers just before closing time while shoppers and staff were oblivious to their intentions.

Drawing their firearms, some of the robbers ordered the frightened shoppers and staff into the storeroom at gunpoint, while their cohorts emptied the tills and raided the cellphone stands.

The store is located near an exit to the mall’s parking and the suspects fled the scene in two getaway cars.

When the Daily Voice visited the store on Wednesday, they were trading as usual although the cellphone rack was still empty.

Staff members also seemed tense and alert and when reporters asked for the manager, they were told he was not available as he had gone to see security.

A supervisor also said: “I cannot give comment on anything.”

Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirms the incident and says no arrests have been made yet.

“No shots were fired. The suspects escaped in two vehicles, one a white Ford Figo,” Van Wyk said.
