Six families, including a nine-months pregnant woman, were left homeless after their rented Wendy houses went up in flames in Arum Avenue, Westlake on Friday night.
The fire apparently started in a bedroom of one of the Wendys and spread within minutes.
All the tenants’ belongings burned to ashes, including documents and bank cards.
Resident Yamie Mnthali says: “It happened at around 9pm. I am not sure how the fire got into my room but I suspect the guys that were smoking outside in the street by my window started it.
“I think they threw something inside and the fire started on my bed. We tried to put it out with water but it just became bigger and bigger and we had to run out.
“Within seconds the whole place was alight."
Another resident, Precious Banda, 27, says she is just grateful that no one got hurt.
"It could have been worse because I was already sleeping when I heard the noise. I lifted my head and I could smell the smoke and feel the heat.
“I rushed out and the flame was so violent, we couldn't put it out and by the time the rescue team arrived everything was gone.”
The main house was partially damaged.
The City of Cape Town spokesperson for Fire and Rescue, Jermaine Carelse, confirms: “The fire was extinguished at 11.44pm and the cause is unknown. No injuries were reported and approximately 15 persons were affected.”
Most of the victims are unemployed and are currently squatting with friends, including a pregnant woman whose baby is due next week.
