A mom and her two-year-old son died after a fire gutted their shack.
The blaze occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning in Dube Road, Joe Slovo informal settlement, near Milnerton.
Misiwe Sinono, 35, and little Khayone’s lives came to a horrific end when their double-storey shack went up in flames.
Neighbour Nonwabisa Nongena, 26, was first on the scene and says she heard the last screams of the mother and son.
“I tried to help them, me and another neighbour. They were stuck inside and we could hear how they were screaming,” Nonwabisa says softly.
Misiwe, who worked as a supervisor in Century City, leaves behind another son who is living in the Eastern Cape.
Her cousin Pinky Sivobole, 39, says they have no idea how the fire started.
“Misiwe and I were very close; she was a very nice person. I last saw her last night, I didn’t know it would be the last,” Pinky said.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Liezl Moodie, says they were called out at about 1am.
“On arrival we found one wood and iron structure damaged by fire. One adult female and one minor male died as a result of fatal burn wounds. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage,” Moodie said.
