Eight people, including seven children, were killed when a fire ripped through the building of a children’s home in Durban in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Robert McKenzie, spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal provincial Emergency Medical Service, said that four people were also injured in the blaze that destroyed a cottage at the Lakehaven Child and Youth Care Centre in Parlock.
Ncumisa Ndelu, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development, said 18 people were inside when the cottage caught alight.
“There were seven children and one 19-year-old that died,” she said.
Ndelu said other children survived and were treated for cuts and smoke inhalation.
