Instead of attending the much anticipated graduation ceremony of his fiancée in person, Clinton Frans had to watch her receiving her degree from his hospital bed via a live video link.
His left leg was amputated just above the knee last week, after he made an accident with his brand new Kawasaki motorbike on Jakes Gerwel Drive on 10 April.
Staff at Gatesville Melomed Hospital were going to transport Clinton, 24, to the graduation ceremony at UCT in an
ambulance, along with a nurse and a paramedic.
But he was not well enough to leave the hospital and the trip was cancelled.
This did not stop Clinton from seeing his high school sweetheart, Kaelyn Dyson, 22, also from Mitchells Plain, graduate with a degree in Social Work (Triple Major) and Politics.
Shameema Adams, of Melomed, said: “Unfortunately Clinton was not well and could not attend the graduation. His health and well-being was our first priority therefore it could not proceed.”
Clinton says a colleague helped with the live video feed: “There were network problems, but it just happened to work out perfectly.
“He managed to record the last two to three minutes and it showed her graduating. I am very proud of her.”
After her graduation ceremony, an emotional Kaelyn went to the hospital to surprise Clinton, still dressed in her cloak and cap.
“I am his support and he is my support,” she said.
Clinton, who works in IT, surprised Kaelyn at the hospital on Sunday night when he popped the big question in front of family and friends and she said yes.
