After feeding the homeless in the Southern Suburbs for over five years, the Key Feeding Scheme says the need to feed is rising, but the supplies are getting less.
Keyaan Hooper started the feeding scheme in 2015 by
giving soup to the homeless at Busy Corner in Grassy Park.
“I started feeding soup to the homeless from a potjie, the soup was never enough as there were also people coming after the potjie was empty,” he says. “It was very sad to see this.
“I then approached a few friends to assist with ingredients and help make the soup.
“We then got a donation of two 80 litre pots and a small gas stove, this was a true blessing.”
Keyaan says he later started a WhatsApp group and now has 58 members.

“We now have three people who make our food,” he says.
“The need for a warm meal grew very rapidly and our area range stretched from Grassy Park to Lotus River, Phumlani, Ottery and Wynberg.
“Our menu has also changed over the years, we now make a variety of foods from soups, curry, akhni, and lentil food to veggie food.
“We try our utmost to make food twice a week, but this ultimately depends on the donations we received.”
“We are always in need of donations and assistance in any form, as our motto says, ‘more more more’, the more we received the more we can make and the more we can feed.”
