A popular takeaway restaurant known for its legendary masala steak sandwiches in Ottery has been gutted by a fire.
The Farm Stall Takeaways on Ottery Road was burnt to the ground on Tuesday morning.
The fire started just after 12am and the flames engulfed the long-standing takeaways within minutes.
Spokesperson for City Fire and Rescue Services, Jermaine Carelse, says the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
“Yes, I can confirm a fire at that location. The Fire and Rescue Services responded at 12.18am to a shop alight in Ottery Road,” Carelse says.
He says it took firefighters over two hours to douse the flames.

“Two fire engines, one water tanker, a rescue vehicle and 14 staff members were dispatched. No injuries were reported. The fire was extinguished at 2.14am. The cause of the fire is unknown,” Carelse added.
It is understood the restaurant belongs to Bangladeshi nationals who bought it from the local owners a few years ago.
The owners could not be reached yesterday.
However, people on social media expressed shock and sadness at the loss.
Moeshfieka posted on Facebook: “Noooooo!!! The Farm Stall in Ottery burnt to the ground early this morning. This is so sad. This place was a Cape Flats institution! (sic)”
And Desiree wrote: “Oh no!! They made delicious takeaways. I didn’t pass that way today. Really sad. (sic)”
An an upset John-James lamented that he wouldn’t be able to get his favourite takeaway meal anymore: “No more full house steak gatsby. (sic)”
