The Crescent Observers Society went out to Three Anchor Bay in Sea Point last night, following in the Islamic tradition of sighting the new moon with the naked eye, which would have heralded the new month of Ramadaan.
Muslims follow the Islamic lunar calendar.
Hundreds of Muslims gathered on the Sea Point promenade under clear skies to try and spot the moon in “perfect weather conditions”.
However, the Crescent Observers Society, after consultation with other observers in Southern Africa, announced that the new moon had not been sighted.
Muslims in South Africa will therefore start fasting on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.
