Hundreds of families in Phumlani Village informal settlement near Grassy Park were left homeless after a fire ripped through their homes on Monday.
Community worker Beryl Williams says she rushed to the scene after frantic calls from residents.
“We couldn’t see how many shacks were affected because the smoke was everywhere and people were trying to save their belongings.
“After the fire was extinguished they counted over 100 shacks that burnt, but it was devastating to see parents coming home from work to find their homes reduced to rubble.
“Thankfully, nobody was hurt.”
Fire and Rescue Services’ Jermaine Carelse says firefighters received the call at 5.13pm and the fire was extinguished at 9.26pm.
Williams says residents have taken refuge in a community hall as the area is being cleared so they can rebuild their homes.
“We ask anyone who can help with bedding, food, clothes and other essentials to assist.”
To help, call Williams on 082 732 6926.
